These hormones are critical for brain development, particularly during fetal and early childhood development. Iodine deficiency during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or congenital abnormalities. It can also result in neurocognitive impairments and reduced IQ in the child.

Fortification of salt with iodine is one of the most effective ways to prevent iodine deficiency. Salt iodization has been successful in many countries, reducing the prevalence of iodine deficiency and its consequences. However, some populations, particularly in remote or impoverished areas, may not have access to iodized salt. In these cases, other strategies, such as iodine supplementation, may be necessary.
